The YMCAs of Québec day camps offer fun-filled activities that are both physically and intellectually stimulating. The Y has long been known for its child development and youth programs for children. Our activities are designed with the needs and interests of each age group in mind. Our high-quality day camp programs are offered to numerous children at nine different locations.

Reporting to the Camp Coordinator and/or Inclusion Specialist, the Companion is responsible for the inclusion of children with special needs into day camp. The companion ensures that the child is included in a group of children the same age; this is done by encouraging the camper to participate in group activities and by helping to facilitate opportunities for the child to interact with others and make friends. S/he participates in the full life of camp as well as establishes and maintains positive relationships with the children, parents/guardians and the camp team.

In order to help everyone, reach their potential, and to ensure a safe and fun camp environment, the Y offers more than fifty hours of training to camp staff to ensure that we have the best summer ever!  Working at camp will; help you develop your leadership skills, will provide you with professional work experience and will allow you to make a difference in a child’s life.  AND, you have access to the YMCA sports facilities throughout the summer to workout, swim or attend group classes!  



Acts as a positive role model for all campers, parents/guardians, participants and YMCA camp staff.

Oversees the wellbeing, cares for and manages the behaviour of one or two child(ren) with special needs.

Builds and maintains positive relationships with campers, parents/guardians and the camp team

Adapts camp activities with the camp animators to ensure that all activities are fun, inclusive and age appropriate.

Accompanies campers in the water during aquatic activities such as swimming lessons or open swim

Ensures that children are safely supervised at all times and that the camp environment is always safe, secure and clean.

Communicates regularly with parents, and responds to parent’s inquiries and questions in a prompt and courteous manner.

Completes regular documentation regarding the child and the ir behaviours at camp, and follows-up with the parent/guardian.

Attends and participates in all required camp meetings and trainings, including weekly staff meetings and welcome telephone calls.



18 years of age + by the first day of camp.

Experience working with children and youth

Experience working with individuals with special needs

Experience working in a residential setting or day camp (an asset).

Comfortable swimming and/or being in the pool.

CPR and First Aid Certification (reduced price with the YMCA).

Proficiency in French and English.

Fluency in a third language (an asset).

Have no criminal record in connection with employment.

DAFA certificat – Diplôme d’aptitude aux fonctions d’animateur (an asset)

Teamwork: Actively builds teams and encourages open relationships for maximum organizational effectiveness.
