Senior Equity and Inclusion Advisor

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Associate Provost (Equity and Academic Policies), the Senior Equity and Inclusion Advisor, oversees the integration of equity work at the University with the operationalization of McGill’s Policy on Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prohibited by Law (the Policy) and other policies and regulations.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Particular responsibilities in connection with the Policy will include:

Advancing the University’s responsibility to “[prevent] Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prohibited by Law by means of education and other proactive efforts to promote awareness about equity among members of the University community, including the nature of Harassment, Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prohibited by Law.” (Section 3 of the Policy).

Under section 5.3 of the Policy:

i) Conducting intake, which includes:

  • Receiving questions and complaints about harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination
  • Providing information about University regulations, and policies
  • Referral to appropriate University resources (e.g., Dean of Students or Faculty Dean, the Office for Sexual Violence Response, Support and Education, Ombudsperson, Health & Counselling Services)
  • Discerning whether a complaint is amenable to informal resolution and, if so, referral to mediation.

ii) maintaining confidential files and records of inquiries and complaints, and their disposition;

iii) ensuring an equitable distribution of work among Assessors appointed under the Policy while considering the wishes of Complainants;

iv) collecting data for the preparation of reports on the Policy’s operation;

v) reporting at least annually to the Provost on the operation of the Policy;

vi) facilitating informal resolutions, where appropriate.

  • Overseeing the programming and scheduling of Assessor training.
  • Ensuring that McGill’s Harassment website is well structured, comprehensive, and up-to-date.
  •  Particular responsibilities associated with campus equity and inclusion will include collaborating with and supporting the AP-EAP to:
  • Develop educational programming oriented toward sensitizing and raising awareness about matters of equity and inclusivity at the University.
  • Provide leadership on a range of initiatives related to equity and inclusion across McGill campuses.
  • Develop and oversee programming for faculty and academic leadership that includes capacity-building for maintaining equitable and inclusive work and learning environments, notably via:
  •  New faculty orientation
  • Academic Leadership Fora
  • Orientation for new academic leadership
  • Ensure that University policies and procedures foreground equity and inclusion.
  • Support review of policies associated with campus equity and inclusion;
  • Support case management of matters arising under academic staff grievance and disciplinary files.
  • Develop and facilitate sessions focused on respectful, equitable and inclusive work and learning environments for academic and administrative units.

Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) years’ related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

Experience in equity and diversity work. Demonstrated cultural competence. Familiarity with University policies and regulations. Background in human resources, law, and/or psychology. Bilingualism (oral, spoken, written). Excellent research and analysis skills. Experience working on sensitive, highly confidential matters and with preserving the integrity and confidentiality of associated records. Ability to take initiative, lead and execute projects that address sensitive and evolving social issues. Capacity to work independently, with the highest level of integrity. Training in social work, law or psychology an asset. Experience in conflict resolution and mediation an asset.
