Manager, Digital Communications

Position Title:

Manager Digital Communications (COM3A)

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Digital Communications, the Manager of Digital Communications works to improve and/or leverage McGill’s online offerings in order to effectively and strategically communicate with each of the University’s targeted audiences; and ensure digital communications strategies align with the overall goals of the University and its constituent units. As part of the central Communications and External Relations digital team, the Digital Communications manager works closely with senior communications professionals and various university stakeholders to attain specific communications objectives for key strategic web sites as well as promote McGill’s mission and brand online. The manager uses his/her leadership and management skills to assist the director in managing the day-to-day operations of the unit while also ensuring the successful execution of projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

Project management:

  • Lead the development of various digital communications strategies focused on end user’s satisfaction.
  • Manage a wide range of digital communications projects. Establish project plans, lead execution and work with content owners, web specialists and other stakeholders to ensure that business goals are met on time and on budget.
  • Manage internal contributors, freelancers and student interns involved in projects.

Change management and business processes improvement:

  • Identify, document and implement strategic improvements to business processes and web governance related to the Web Evolution Project.
  • Apply change management processes and tools to create a strategy to support adoption of the changes required by the web evolution project.
  • Conduct impact analyses, assesses change readiness and identify key stakeholders.
  • Support the design, development, delivery and management of communications.
  • Document requirements and support the design and delivery of training programs and materials.
  • Collaborate with IT and other stakeholders to develop and implement the migration strategy related to the web evolution project.

Other tasks:

  • Act as back-up for certain functions of the Director, Digital Communications, including personnel management.
  • Act as a member of McGill’s Emergency Communications team, publishing messages on the Web and other mass-communications vehicles in emergency and crisis situations according to established protocol.
  • Create and update content on websites managed by Communications and External Relations.
  • Provide senior administrators and other stakeholders from the McGill community with planning support, troubleshooting and other guidance.

Minimum Education & Experience:

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) years’ related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

Undergraduate degree in business administration, communications or a related field. Demonstrated ability to work on multiple initiatives and to manage project goals and deadlines in a rapidly changing context. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to interact and collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups in a cross functional set-up. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.Sound knowledge of digital communications strategies and techniques including web site creation, social media marketing and search engine optimization.Experience and knowledge of change management principles, methodologies and tools.Familiarity with project management approaches, tools and phases of the project lifecycle. Strong English-language writing and editing skills, focused on web communications. Ability to communicate in fluently in French. Intermediate knowledge of HTML, CSS and Photoshop. Experience with WordPress and Drupal 7. Drupal 8 is an asset. Experience working in a higher education environment is an asset.
