Digital Design Project Manager

This is a Full-time position in Montréal, QC posted March 30, 2018.

Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Director, Digital Communications, the UX (User Experience) and Design Project Manager is responsible for creating high quality, user-centered design solutions that bring clarity and simplicity to complex online workflows. His/her knowledge of online branding, usability and web ergonomics will be used to continuously refine and improve functionality of McGill websites. He or she will also provide strategic design leadership across various digital communications platforms. As part of the central Communications and External Relations digital team, the UX and Design Manager works closely with a team of marketing and communications professionals, front-end developers and various university stakeholders to balance technical, business, and user requirements while striving to attain communications objectives.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Design and user experience:

  • Develop, implement and maintain digital design best practices and standards to elevate the McGill’s presence across web sites and platforms. 
  • Research, design, and revise wireframes, prototypes, and mockups of websites, applications, email templates, and other web interfaces. Design graphic user interface elements, like buttons, menus, tabs and icons.
  • Apply best practices in accessibly to ensure maximum usability on a variety of devices (ex. mobile) and under a variety of constraints (ex. slow connection speed, impaired vision).
  • Gather and evaluate user requirements through research artifacts such as personas, usability tests and customer journey maps. Use insights from research to develop and justify design solutions in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Build and maintain an online web style guide in line with the visual identity standards. 
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to team members and collaborators about the benefits of user-centric web design.
  • Oversee technical implementation of designs to ensure their execution respects quality and user experience standards.
  • Collaborate with web developers, marketing specialists, communications professionals and others to ensure consistency and quality across all platforms and features Project Management.

Project management:

  • Manage web projects, including receiving client requests, hosting client briefs and working with the team of writers, developers and digital strategists to ensure the completion of projects on time and on budget.
  • Help translate communications objectives into user research questions, and work with technical teams to ensure that solutions delivered respect client and user objectives.
  • Establish project plans, lead kick-off meetings, and ensure that mandates remain on track and that deliverables are met.
  • Manage internal contributors, freelancers and student interns involved in projects.
  • Have a holistic, result-driven perspective on projects and operations. Take initiative to propose strategic improvements to policies and processes.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for the acquisition of new technology and software in partnership with Procurement and IT Other tasks.

Other responsibilities:

  • Create and update websites using McGill’s Drupal-based CMS or WordPress.
  • Act as a member of McGill’s Emergency Communications team, publish messages on the Web and other mass-communications vehicles in emergency and crisis situations according to established protocol.
  • Keep current with best practices and new tools in the rapidly changing fields of web communications, online marketing, design and multimedia.

Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree

Five (5) years’ related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

Undergraduate degree in fine arts, communications or related areas.Experience in both web design and management of technical projects.Solid experience in user-centered design, testing methodologies as well as usability and accessibility concerns.Familiar with responsive design, UI/UX and wireframing. Understanding of SEO concepts in site structure.Ability to measure and report project success, and to propose data-driven improvements and optimizations.Expert-level proficiency with Photoshop, Sketch and/or Axure. Experience with other Adobe Creative Suite products as well as a good understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and emerging internet application technologies.Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with technical teams in the successful execution of design and communications mandates. Experience with WordPress and Drupal 7. Drupal 8 is an asset.Experience working in a higher education environment an asset.Excellent multitasking and project management skills.Demonstrated strategic thinking, analytical skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to high standards. Self-motivated and ability to work well with multiple teams in cross-functional environment.Strong English/French communication and presentation skills.
