Director, Marine Operations & Chartering

This is a Full-time position in Montréal, QC posted November 20, 2018.

Under the oversight of the Vice President, Logistics, Distribution & Customer Service, this position isresponsible for the marine operations for the company’s vessels and provides leadership for the company in respect of:

  • Marine Operations & Chartering
  • Marine Scheduling
  • Marine Safety Operations
  • Environmental Operations
  • Fleet Logistics


  • Negotiate voyage and time charter contracts with owners/operators/charterers/brokers
  • Pursue 3rd party business opportunities to complement in-house trade
  • In-charge of pricing freight for in-house and 3rd party businesses
  • Building strong collaboration with trade, execution and operations teams
  • Represents the Vice President throughout the organization internally & externally in all the relevant areas incorporated within the Marine department
  • Managing the Marine operations and associated budget for the company (emergency planning inrespect of unforeseen emergencies or weather contingencies and amending as required formarine, nautical, safety and environmental)
  • Develops and ensures the standardization of current and future fleet operational policies,procedures and standards for marine, nautical, safety and environmentalResponsible for the leadership and internal development of the shore side Marine Operations team (BMSU operations)
  • Oversee implementation of environmental protection and pollution prevention within all company Marine Operations
  • Liaison and partner with multiple external regulatory organizations such as USCG and ABS formarine, nautical safety and environmental related matters
  • Manage projects as assigned by the Vice President
  • Work with all safety and regulatory bodies to see that all critical projects are executed incompliance
  • Responsible for developing budgets for operations and projects
  • Partner with other Marine and Technical consultants during specified projects to verify all area requests are being met
  • Safety Management System (SMS) Responsibilities include:
  1. Implementation of the general safety management responsibilities in SMS
  2. Accountable for implementing Safety Management System policies and procedures relativeto areas of responsibilities
  3. Develops and modifies SMS policies, LOGs and operational manuals and approves them inthe areas of marine, nautical, safety, environment areas. Verifies that modifications are incompliance with the International rules and regulations for safe vessel operations


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • 5-8 years of experience in dry bulk chartering
  • Good understanding of shipping and global dry bulk freight markets
  • Excellent negotiation skills and professional integrity
  • Good network within the shipping community
  • Experience in commodity trading house an added advantage
  • Proven ship handling and sailing experience as Captain an added advantage
  • Proven experience designing & implementing Safety and Regulatory training programs
  • Port and or Terminal operations experience
  • Understanding of marine certifications
  • Ability to travel a minimum of 25% of the year and work weekends
  • Perfecty bilingual french/english

  • Master mariner’s license (valid or expired)
