This is a Full-time position in Montréal, QC posted January 11, 2019.

For the past 40 years, GIRO has established itself as a leader in the development of optimization software designed to improve productivity in the public transport and postal distribution industries.

Located in Montreal, GIRO has currently more than 500 full-time employees, mainly professionals in IT and operational research, serving over 325 public transportation and postal companies found in 27 countries (Montreal, New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Barcelona, Sydney, Singapore, Paris, Hong Kong, etc.).


You are part of the user-interface development team for our software products. Development is carried out in a Windows environment, with occasional forays into Web technologies, and following recognized practices of software engineering (specifications, prototyping, technical reviews, etc.) and of quality assurance.

Main responsibilities

As a UX Designer, you will draw on your knowledge of the target users and the concepts of ergonomics to work with the development teams to ensure the usability of our software tools and optimize the user experience. The incumbent will make their contribution by providing an expert assessment, by user testing, or by collaborating directly on design with the creative teams. You will provide conclusions that lead to concrete solutions, discussed and applied in collaboration with the various stakeholders in the project.

Your responsibilities consist in:

  • Working closely with product managers to identify and clarify clients’ requirements. Developing user scenarios to help with designing and defining the software application
  • Designing user interfaces based on the functional requirements, users’ needs and task analysis
  • Communicating designs to the development teams with the help of diagrams, drawings, detailed specifications and interactive prototypes
  • Assembling data on users (by various research methods) both in general (workflow) and in more detail (particular user interfaces)
  • Conducting surveys and interviews with internal experts, analysts and users
  • Evaluating user interfaces using a heuristic approach, with reviews by experts, and with usability tests (when applicable)
  • Collaborating with the development teams and guiding their implementation of user interfaces
  • Contributing to drafting the interface guidelines and the specification for customized/advanced UI controls that must be included in the system common library of UI controls

  • Bachelor’s degree in a connected field (computer science, software ergonomics/HCI, industrial design, communications, cognitive psychology)
  • Master’s degree in cognitive ergonomics, an asset
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in UI analysis and design (for software, an asset)
  • Excellent knowledge of user-oriented design methods
  • Demonstrated ability to design interactive UI prototypes
  • Knowledge of programming and software-design methods
  • Ability to work in a team; good communications skills
  • Knowledge of branding strategy, typography, or any other related field, an asset
  • Graphic design skills (designing icons or other elements of graphic interfaces), an asset
  • Availability to travel internationally
  • Ability to communicate in French and English (oral and written)
