Registered Nurse – General Surgery/Thoracics

This is a Contract position in Montreal, QC posted May 31, 2021.

Your Opportunity: A Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with RAH and AHS policy and procedures.

The Surgery Inpatient program maintains the expectation that all employees do so with pride, compassion, and respect.

PCU 31 is a 24-bed unit plus an 8 bed observation unit providing care primarily to thoracic and general surgery patients.

Patients are received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care units, and directly from home and/or medical clinics.

We have modified nursing care on all shifts with Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Health Care Aides working cohesively within the collaborative model of care.

Unit orientation will be established based on experience.

Successful candidates will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives at the front line; supporting and maintaining high quality patient care strategies within the Surgery program.

RNs are expected to direct and monitor the care provided by Health Care Aides and support their LPN peers.

RNs are expected to take on the responsibility of charge nurse as required.

Position requires candidates to perform moderate to heavy work on a regular basis in order to ensure safe patient care and safety of unit staff.

All staff are required to assist with mobilization of patients with a variety of ambulation needs and disabilities.

Description: As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being.

In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families.

You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance.

You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support
– Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications: Candidates are required to write a medication calculation exam on interview.

Failure to achieve a passing mark on the exam may impact decision to hire.

CARNA registration required, and maintained through duration of employment.

Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication and priority setting skills required.

Demonstrated reliability required.

Able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Basic computer skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years’ Charge nurse experience preferred.

Two years’ previous orthopedic and surgical experience preferred.

IV, PCA, epidural, Central Line Drains and Wound Care experience preferred.
