Data Governance Steward


This is a Contract position in Montreal, QC posted June 15, 2022.

BRP is seeking a Data Governance Steward to play an active role in establishing the data governance landscape at BRP.  This position will be responsible for deploying and enforcing policies and procedures that ensure data is used and maintained properly. This includes performing business process analysis, identifying gaps and inefficiencies, and proposing solutions and plans to streamline; as well as contributing to the definition and implementation of data management processes that enable the optimal and secure use of data, while respecting compliance, privacy, confidentiality and security policies.  The data governance steward is also responsible for identifying opportunities for new data elements and identifying data quality issues impacting the insight and analytics. The role involves working independently and creatively to collect and analyze data, assess technical requirements, and designing and implementing solutions for critical issues related to data. 


Duties and responsibilities generally include but are not limited to:

  • Provide strategic guidance to data producers and users in understanding how to leverage data to its full potential for the benefit of enterprise and customers, within data governance perspective.
  • Serve as a data governance advisor to decision-making bodies in relation to the evolution and application of processes and controls in data management.
  • Determine, develop, operationalize and regularly evolve the standards, processes, tools and best practices related to the data governance foundation.
  • Coordinate the identification of the business lines’ needs and opportunities related to the data in order to contribute to the definition of the strategic orientations of data governance.
  • Support the business lines’ decision-making bodies in analyzing risks and potential gaps between the expectations of data frameworks and operational practices.
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of practices and mechanisms to ensure compliance with data frameworks.
  • Provide leadership and expertise to various stakeholders on projects to proactively address cross-functional business needs through the development of highly innovative approaches and strategic and complex data governance interventions.
  • Coordinate, track, measure and report on the performance of the standards and practices deployed, including the evolution of data governance maturity.
  • Leading cross-functional and innovative projects related to the evolution of data governance.
  • Contribute to a data governance framework implementation, to define, develop, operationalize and evolve standards, tools and best practices related to data quality and its enhancement. 
  • Create and bring the concrete value from data governance conceptual to the business sectors and reverse value as well as adapt your communications to the stakeholders.
  • Partner with Business Stakeholders and IT to drive continuous improvement of our data management capabilities, practices, and outcomes to enhance both business performance and compliance levels over time through achievement of target information maturity model milestones.
  • Establish and propose the recommendations on the use of data and compliance with applicable data frameworks in the context of strategic, cross-functional and innovative files that have a major impact on the organization's orientations. Which includes the best practice and ownership of the corporate taxonomy and ontology and develop rules for their use.
  • Develop standards, policies and procedures to support the creation and provide technical assurance for the on-going implementation of the data governance policy within the business.
  • Elaborate business glossary with business Data Stewards and SMEs; determine data criticality in the context of identified business processes; Assess general data quality and identify data issues.
  • Develop process improvements to enhance overall data quality.
  • Develop rules and process to control the integrity (accuracy, thoroughness, process compliance) of all data within Data Warehouse and Big Data environment
  • Recommend which data rules, responsibilities & data management processes should be implemented or changed.
  • Determine root causes and business impacts of data quality issues; Assess existing data rules & responsibilities; Determine and prioritize data related risks with business Data Stewards and SMEs.


  • Bachelor's degree in business technology, computer science, information systems or a related study, or equivalent related project experience.
  • 5+ years experience in the field of data management, analysis, query development and implementation of complex technology systems.
  • Strong knowledge on Data Governance and Data Quality concepts.
  • Strong ability to work in undiscovered, unstructured territories and to formalize processes that are currently not formalized.
  • Strong ability to link technical elements (Data Models) to business elements (Business process mapping).
  • Knowledge of database structures and querying tools (SQL, MySQL, OLAP, Data Warehouse, etc.) experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of best practices and latest trends in data management is preferred.
  • Experience in business requirements gathering.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to influence and orient business and technical audiences toward a common goal that is satisfying all stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to manage different stakeholder perspectives and resistance to change.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and in a cross functional environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with working with Key Performance Indicators.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment and in a cross functional environment and communicate with people at various levels up to senior management.
  • Attention to details and ability to deliver mandate with great autonomy – self-driven
  • Ability at taking decisions by understanding and explaining trade-offs between business enablement and economics impacts.


  • Familiarity with Data Governance tools such AXON, Colibra, Datum etc. as a strong asset
  • Knowledge of SAP modules (MM, SCM, GTS, Ariba, MDG, etc.) considered as a strong asset
  • Knowledge of data visualization software (Power BI, Tableau, etc.) considered as a strong asset
  • A Master’s Degree is an asset
