Tax Specialist

Duties and Responsibilities and competencies:

The Senior Tax Specialist can expect to focus his or her efforts in the following areas:

  • Preparation and review of Canadian individual, partnership, corporate and trust/estate income tax returns, including those of non-residents;
  • Carry-out advanced tax research using Taxnetpro and other tax databases and search engines in order to prepare short memoranda on findings;
  • Analyze Revenue Canada and Revenue Quebec’s notices of assessments and draft appropriate responses;
  • Plan, schedule, and be responsible for coordinating tax projects and tax mandates of a more complex nature, in response to tax queries from clients and tax authorities;
  • Assist in the development of establishing needed processes for automating certain tax functions;
  • Develop and carry-out training sessions on new and emerging tax topics to all firm staff.

Experience and competencies:

  • Has a minimum of 2-3 years tax work experience in a professional services firm, demonstrating knowledge of advanced tax concepts to respond to the CRA/RQ requests, including tax audits;
  • Has a degree in accounting and has successfully completed a Master’s degree in taxation or the CICPA In-Depth tax course;
  • Possesses good communication skills in both official languages;
  • Analytical capacity to perform advanced level research and corroborate findings;
  • Organizational and computer skills required to efficiently plan and execute scheduled tax mandates for clients, sometimes within tight deadlines;
  • Willingness to attend conferences, participate in client meetings, and to network with others so as to further grow the tax department

As the senior tax specialist, you will gain more confidence in the performance of your work, including the allocation of a partial client list.  You will have the opportunity to further build the technical and other skills necessary for your progression in responsibilities to reach a managerial position.
