Senior Analyst Car Accounting- 6 month contract

    Job Summary

    The Senior Analyst, Car Accounting is responsible for leading the general accounting activities associated with Car Hire in Canada and in the United States (U.S.) as per the Association of American Railroad (AAR) rules. The position’s interpretation of the complex rules set by the AAR is key in ensuring proper treatment of Car Hire and the role contributes to audit efforts.

    Main Responsibilities

    Accounting Reporting

    • Gather and analyze monthly Car Hire income and expense data for the accurate, timely and complete actuals and accruals reporting for all on-line and off-line usage of cars in Canada and the U.S.
    • Gather and analyze monthly Car Hire income and expense system car data for the accurate, timely and complete transfer pricing reporting in compliance with tax rules
    • Clear G/L accounts and prepare monthly account reconciliations in line with CN’s corporate guidelines
    • Record off-line and on-line lease earnings and communicate with lessors for missing lease earning amounts
    • Compile and post receivable and payable Mexican tax for taxation reporting
    • Contact customers on outstanding receivable amounts, process deposits and update the accounts receivable subledger
    • Prepare vouchers using appropriate accounting distribution and update accounts payable subledger
    • Issue invoices, ensure payments and adequate equalization reporting for private line mileage moves in Canada and the U.S. are properly administered under their respective tariffs

    Controls and Validations

    • Assess the validity of inbound reclaims based on set business rules and agreements and issue counter reclaims
    • Ensure all cars leased by CN generate proper Car Hire earnings
    • Review time and rate payable claims and evaluate if due to foreign roads
    • Validate and process both inbound and outbound counters to counters
    • Review and create reclaims for invalid Inbound Rule 5
    • Investigate and ensure that all Car Hire is recovered on idle cars
    • Identify any control deficiencies or new controls required for recommendations to the Manager, Car Accounting

    Process Improvements

    • Perform business analysis of processes and workflows for recommendations to Manager, Car Accounting
    • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to identify needs and business rules for productivity tools to be developed or enhanced in the Car Accounting system or any other technological solutions
    • Act as a backup for peers

    Working Conditions

    The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

    Requirements

    Experience

    Accounting, Finance or Economics

    • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

    Education/Certification/Designation

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or Economics, or equivalent
    • Accounting designation or working towards an accounting designation

    Technical Skills/Knowledge

    • In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) as well asSystems, Applications and Products (SAP) BusinessObjects
    • Knowledge of Service Reliability System (SRS) and ability to read car movement records
    • Fluently bilingual in both written and verbal (English, French)

    The Senior Analyst, Car Accounting is responsible for reporting all Car Hire accounting activities, reviews assigned and issue amounts due by foreign roads based on AAR rules, and interpreting terms and conditions set in special agreements. The position impacts accurate, timely and complete Car Hire reporting, protecting revenue and controlling expenses, compliance and customer relations.

    Level of Interaction/Influence

    The Senior Analyst, Car Accounting interacts with individuals internal and external to CN. Within the organization, the incumbent liaises with the Accounting, Car Management, Information Technology (I&T), Accounting Development, Fleet Management, Costing, Financial Planning, and Marketing teams. Outside of CN, the role communicates with Railroads, Greenbrier Management Services, Railinc and TTX.

    Employees Supervised/Organizational Structure

    The senior Analyst, Car Accounting reports to the Manager, Car Accounting and has no supervisory responsibilities.
