Job Summary

The Manager Commodity Tax and Projects is responsible for the implementation of the new Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) S/4HANA Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for taxes and handling Canadian and United States (U.S.) indirect tax planning and compliance. The position is accountable for a smooth transition to the new SAP system for all tax matters, integration and maintenance of the Vertex sales tax engine in order to support the Senior Manager Commodity Tax and Projects for U.S. and Canadian tax matters. The incumbent works with a variety of internal stakeholders and external consultants ensuring success project delivery. Furthermore, the role indirectly reports to the S/4HANA Project Core team with significant interaction and exposure to various Finance teams (Financial Reporting, Financial Planning, etc.) and the Senior Leadership team.

Main ResponsibilitiesProject Responsibilities 

·       Document, analyze, clarify and prioritize all tax requirements for transformation project using SAP S/4HANA ERP

·       Work closely with the S/4HANA Project Core team and various business functions to analyze and look for ways to leverage available technology to improve processes

·       Review and provide feedback on detailed process design and functional specifications developed by the solution integrator and Information and Technology (I&T) for all tax matters

·       Work closely with business partners to validate and obtain sign-off on the future state taxation processes

·       Participate in user acceptance testing activities, including documenting test cases, executing business processes, and recording test results

·       Participate in the process of data migration and perform tasks related to security and controls

·       Protect and improve CN’s internal and external tax reporting processes, including development of new tax reviews reports and analysis

Tax Reporting and Compliance

·       Review, develop, implement, and test new procedures, controls and systems changes within Corporate and Operations groups to maintain Canadian and U.S. sales tax compliance, including validating that legislation changes are accurately reflected in the systems

·       Identify and communicate opportunities for tax savings and recoveries, or tax non-compliance situations, and in implementing measures to benefit or correct them

·       Run external sales tax recovery projects

·       Co lead U.S. and Canadian indirect tax audits and respond to queries on a timely basis with the goal of minimizing audit adjustments, assessing audit exposures and implementing corrective measures for issues identified during the audit

Tax Advisory and Planning

·       Provide advice, guidance and recommendations on various types of taxes such as Good and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), Quebec Sales Tax (QST), Provincial Sales (PST), U.S. Sales and Used Taxes and Excise tax related to issues raised by various departments

·       Develop and deliver training and guidance material to various departments

·       Provide commodity tax advice and recommendations on specific transactions and projects, such as deal structuring and cross-border planning, acquisitions, divestitures and reorganizations

·       Stay up to date on commodities tax legislation, jurisprudence and government practices to understand the potential impacts to CN

·       Advocate for favourable CN tax policies with government officials

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The incumbent must be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The role requires occasional travel (20%) to our Homewood office in Illinois Travel may be required, on occasion, to our Homewood office in Illinois.



·       Minimum 10 years of experience in indirect taxes (GST, HST, QST, PST, Carbon and Fuel)

o   Experience collaborating with key government officials on tax policy impacting the company and railway industry *

·       Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Law

·       Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Canada or equivalent

·       Member of a tax professionals’ group (e.g., Tax Executives Institute) or other indirect tax committees *

Technical Skills/Knowledge

·       Ability to interpret complex tax legislation and simplify it for non-tax personnel

·       Ability to handle complex government tax audits

·       Ability to work with multiple accounting software systems

·       Expertise in designing tax effective strategies and defending them during government audits

·       Ability to lead and work with outside advisors on best practices 

·       Ability to interpret complex tax rules and summarize them for senior management

·       In-depth knowledge of SAP and experience with system changes*
