Business Senior Accountant- Sox

Job Summary

The Business Senior Accountant is responsible for the implementation of the new SAP S/4HANA Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. The role, representing the Finance business users, is responsible for simplifying, improving and harmonizing Finance’s key business processes by leveraging the new technology platform S/4HANA to reach the next level. The incumbent works with a variety of internal stakeholders ensuring success project delivery as well as timely and accurate preparation of financial information. Furthermore, the role is within or reports to the Project Core team with significant interaction and exposure to various Finance teams (Financial Reporting, Financial Planning, etc.) and the Senior Leadership team.

Main ResponsibilitiesSarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Controls Business Related Activities  -40%

·       Identify significant financial reporting risks arising from the SAP S/4HANA ERP implementation and recommend temporary compensatory SOX controls

·       Work closely with the Project Core and SOX teams as well as Control owners to update existing processes and related controls impacted by the project implementation

o   Provide information and clarification about future processes

o   Ensure all key internal controls over financial reporting are updated and are in place at the go-live date of the system implementation

·       Ensure documentation is prepared and updated (e.g. SOX narratives) ahead of the system deployment Collaborate with the SOX team and both internal and external auditors in order to validate identified significant financial reporting risks and confirm the related key controls are designed and implemented appropriately

·       Lead the Information Technology General Controls (ITGC) and security roles by ensuring risks are identified

o   Ensure all new risks are identified and related key controls are in place to mitigate those risks, including the update of the required documentation

o   Collaborate with the I&T Security team to define and assign security roles in S/4HANA and validate that they are in compliance with the segregation of duties rules

·       Identify and put in place all the interface controls

Project Responsibilities -20%

·       Document and analyze business requirements for finance transformation project using SAP S/4HANA ERP

·       Review and provide business feedback on detailed process design and functional specifications developed by the solution integrator and Information and Technology (I&T)

·       Work closely with business partners to validate and obtain sign-off on the future-state financial processes

·       Analyze, clarify and prioritize project requirements

·       Participate in user acceptance testing activities, including documenting test cases, executing business processes and recording test results

·       Perform tasks related to security and controls

·       Participate in the process of data migration from legacy system to new SAP system

·       Support change management activities

Finance Process Optimization -40%

·       Work closely with the Project Core team and various Finance functions to analyze and look for ways to leverage available technology to improve processes

·       Ensure that future processes put in place are optimized and the best solutions are selected to achieve objectives

·       Protect and improve CN’s external reporting processes such as prepare quarterly and annual reports required by various regulators as well as maintain business rules

·       Protect and improve CN’s internal reporting processes such as prepare account reconciliations and internal financial reports, including compliance with accounting policies and procedures regarding SAP transaction processing

 Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday and is eligible to participate in CN’s flexible work from home policy. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements Experience


·       Minimum 3 years of experience within an accounting firm or relevant industry experience


·       Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent

·       Graduate Diploma in Accounting

·       Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)

Technical Skills/Knowledge

·       Understand the technical aspects of accounting and financial reporting

·       Knowledge of SAP (e.g. General Ledger, Consolidation)

·       Expertise in the application of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), securities commissions’ reporting rules and regulations in both Canada and the U.S.

·       Expertise in SOX rules and regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, integrated Framework (2013) issued by COSO or internal controls over financial reporting

·       Strong analytical skills to consider interrelationships between processes in order to maintain strong Internal control over financial reporting (ICFR)

·       Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

·       Knowledge of other software applications including Word, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, and Business Objects

·       Knowledge of Business Warehouse, Workiva and TM1 applications*
